Educators in general have a pivotal role to play in the level of inclusion of lesbian, gay and bisexual issues in school life; they are also critical to creating school environments that are free from homophobia.

A general rule of thumb is to assume that there are LGB learners within every school population. There will also be learners who have family members (parents, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc) who are lesbian, gay or bisexual. The language used in everyday school life can be used to include or exclude. In line with legislation (Equal Status Acts 2000 & 2004) a zero tolerance approach should be adopted to homophobic bullying and harassment, this includes name-calling.

Addressing the needs of LGB learners can be done quite simply by:

  • Working towards a positive and supportive school culture where homophobic name-calling bullying and harassment are not tolerated
  • People of all sexual orientations are considered normal and treated with respect and dignity. Where possible people who identify as LGB should be made visible in the curriculum and content of what is being taught.
  • Support and information is offered to young people identifying as LGB or who are perceived to be LGB.

Resource for Including LGB learners

Pobal (formerly known as ADM) have published ‘More than a Phase: A Resource Guide for the Inclusion of young Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Learners’ The easy to use guide is for use within formal and non-formal education settings. It comprises of five inserts which include a glossary of terms, a resource list, a separate ‘how-to-guide ’ for both the formal and the non -formal education setting; and perhaps the most important part, a booklet designed to assist those who don ’t have a lot of experience or knowledge in this area in, ‘Understanding the Issues’.

Resources for tackling homophobic bulling

Belong To Youth Project and the Equality Authority have produced a series of resources to raise awareness of homophobic bullying in schools aimed at creating an environment where LGBT learners are safe within their school environments.
