Senator Ivana Bacik today published a Bill which seeks to remove a legal hurdle to marriage. The Bill seeks to amend the Civil Registration Act (2004) which prohibits marriage between people of the same gender.
"The Proposed removal of the legislative hurdle to marriage for lesbian and gay couples is a welcome development.

A group of Labour Senators and TDs today (7th March) publish the Employment Equality (Amendment) (No 2) Bill 2013. The Bill seeks to amend Section 37.1 of the Employment Equality Act to remove any prospect of teachers being discriminated against based on who they are.
GLEN welcomes this Bill as significant progress and we look forward to working with the Oireachtas to ensure that full employment equality is provided for LGBT people and that no threat or perception remains that LGBT people can be discriminated against in employment.

Ruairí Quinn TD, the Minister for Education today (Wednesday 20th February) opens an EU conference on homophobic and transphobic bullying in schools taking place in Dublin.
The Conference is first ever EU-level conference on homophobic and transphobic bullying in schools. It is being held in association with the Irish EU Presidency and the Department of Education and is organised by ILGA-Europe, GLEN and BeLonG To.

As part of LGBT History Month, GLEN Chair Kieran Rose presents a talk on Thursday 21st Feb, on the journey towards equality for LGBT people in Ireland from decriminalisation in 1993 to the achievements of the present day and onwards to the remaning challenges.
The talk ill be introduced by Ailbhe Smyth, the Chair of the National Lesbian and Gay Federation.

Following the recent €24,000 Equality Tribunal decision against an employer, the article interviews GLEN Director of Workplace Diversity, Davin Roche, highlighting the business case for LGBT diversity and inclusion and practical steps employers and employees can take.

Tonight the UK House of Commons has passed the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, by an overwhelming majority. The final vote in favour of marriage was 400 to 175 at Second Reading. The Bill now goes onto the next stages.

Today, Tuesday January 29th, the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairi Quinn TD and the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald TD launched Ireland's first action plan to stem the tide of bullying, and in particular homophobic bullying. The plan was drawn up over nine months by the Anti-Bullying Working Group established by the Department of Education and Skills.

Jonathan O'Brien, the Sinn Fein spokesperson on Education has introduced a Bill in the Dáil which seeks to provide greater legal guidance for schools to address bullying. The Bill is being debated on 22nd and 23rd January.

The Equality Tribunal announced today that it has ordered an employer to pay €24,000 for discrimination and victimisation on the basis of sexual orientation.
"The Equality Tribunal's decision is a sharp reminder to all employers of their duty to protect staff from discrimination and that this duty also extends to protecting staff who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender from harassment in their workplaces" said Davin Roche, Director of Workplace Diversity, at GLEN, Gay and Lesbian Equality Network.
