As the Olympics begin today, GLEN today launch a new poster campaign celebrating Ireland's achievements for lesbian and gay people over the last 20 years. The campaign will run in a number of sites in Dublin coinciding with the Olympics.
We celebrate the major milestones along the track to equality. From decriminalisation to Employment Equality to Civil Partnership; the last hurdle to clear is access to civil marriage.

Google announced a new campaign ‘legalize love' which aims to inspire countries around the world to support lesbian, gay and bisexual people and to legalize same-sex marriage. [jump here]

The Government has proposed a Notice of Motion to the Oireachtas to propose establishing a constitutional convention. One of the functions of the convention will be to examine the issue of same sex marriage and make a recommendation to the government within 12 months of the commencment of its public work.

Building on the success of civil partnership, public and political Ireland is quickly evolving to supporting the next step for lesbian and gay couples: providing access to civil marriage. [jump here]
In Ireland, the Tanaiste and Minister for Justice both supported equal marriage this week. Internatioally political support is increasing, with the new French Prime Minister saying that society is evolving...the government will respond to that".
Public support for gay marriage in Ireland has increased significantly over the last 6 years, from 51% in a 2006 poll to 73% in a poll carried out by the Government last year.
To move to marriage now and provide full Constitutional equality for lesbian and gay people is not a massive legislative leap; it is an incremental step building on the success of Civil Partnership legislation.
